12 inmates escape in Kogi prison jailbreak

Twelve inmates on Monday morning escaped from the Kotonkarfe Prison in Kogi State during an early jailbreak.

 Kingsley Femi Fanwo, the state’s Commissioner for Information and Communication, made the disclosure

in a statement.

However, he also said the prompt response of security operatives brought the ”unfortunate” under control, adding that measures are being taken to avert  reoccurrence.

According to the statement, the authorities have begun investigating the matter with a view to determine the circumstances that led to the incident following a report that the escaped inmates passed through the tower without being discovered or damaging the tower.

“This calls for a thorough investigation to determine the exact circumstances of the escape, arrest the fleeing inmates, and identify possible saboteurs within the system,” the commissioner said.

Furthermore, Fanwo said the state governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo, has ordered the State Security Adviser to work with the authorities at the prison to find ways to prevent a repeat of the incident, promising that the state government would collaborate and aid security agencies to function effectively.

He also assured the residents that hey had nothing to fear.

“There is no cause for panic. We encourage citizens to go about their daily activities as normal, knowing that the security of lives and property remains our top priority,” he said.
