The senator representing Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, has rejected her suspension from the Senate for six months, adding that it violated the principles of natural justice, fairness, and equity.
The lawmaker was on Thursday suspended, following the recommendation by its Committee on Ethics, Code of Conduct, and Public Petitions, which investigated her allegations of sexual harassment against the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.
According to the Senate, the lawmaker was suspended because of a “total violation of the Senate Standing Orders, 2023 as amended.”
Furthermore, the Senate ordered the withdrawal of her security sides as well as the stoppage of her salaries and allowances and that of her staff.
As part of the disciplinary action, Akpoti-Uduaghan is expected to tender a public apology at the end of her suspension before she could resume.
However, reacting to the development on her Facebook page, the senator slammed the decision, stating that it was an attempt to silence and intimidate her.
“Against the culture of silence, intimidation, and victim-shaming, my unjust suspension from the Nigerian Senate invalidates the principles of natural justice, fairness, and equity,” she said.
“The illegal suspension does not withdraw my legitimacy as a senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. I will continue to use my duly elected position to serve my constituents and country to the best of my ability till 2027 and beyond.”
