Council boss, 6 others killed in bloodbath as APC, PDP battle for control of LGs in Osun

The Chairman of Irewole Local Government, Osun State, Mr Remi Abass, was on Monday as the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and the All Progressives Congress, APC, continued their battle over the control of local government.

There were allegations that Abass was killed by hoodlums reportedly working for the PDP, after taking over the council secretariat in Ikire.

The two parties have been laying claim to control of the local governments.

While the APC claimed that the Court of Appeal judgement delivered last week  reinstated the sacked elected council chairmen and councillors, the State Government said the election was nullified by the Federal High Court in Osogbo.

It was gathered that the slain council boss, Abass, led other sacked council officials to take over in line with the court’s verdict.

He had reportedly entered the Secretariat when hoodlums allegedly working for the PDP, stormed the Secretariat to dislodge them, resulting in an exchange of gunshots during which Abass was killed while several others were injured.

Some of the political thugs also reportedly stormed the highway shooting sporadically into the air, creating fear in the area.

According to a source: “The thugs came out from the building opposite the Secretariat, wielding gun. They deliberately targeted the council chairman. Many surrounded him and did not allow him to escape from the scene and killed him.”

The state government also claimed that six members of the PDP we’re killed.

Mr Soji Ajeigbe, the state Commissioner for Protocol and Government Affairs in the state, claimed that two PDP members, Ege and Igara, were killed by gun-wielding thugs allegedly working for the APC.

“Apart from those killed, six others were killed while they were attempting to take-over the Secretariat. We have deposited the bodies in the morgue while the injured were receiving treatment at the hospital,” he said.

The governor of the state, Ademola Adeleke, had on Sunday convened a press conference where he accused his predecessor and minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, of plans to cause mayhem in the state.

“Before I continue this address, let me affirm that I know Mr. President to be a true democrat, a lover of rule of law, and a believer in the sanctity of the judicial process.

“I know, as a matter of fact, that Mr. President will never authorise a dictatorial violation of the constitution irrespective of who is involved. It is crucial to add that Mr. President will never support any action that is capable of generating bloodbath and bloodshed.

“I, however, regret to inform Mr. President and the public that Mr Gboyega Oyetola has concluded an arrangement to cause mayhem in Osun State starting from Monday,” he had said.
