Tunji Alausa, the Minister of Education, had denied reports that the Federal Government has scrapped the Junior Secondary School, JSS, and the Senior Secondary School, SSS, classes from Nigeria’s school system.
The media have been awash with reports that the government had replaced the 6-3-3-4 with 12-4 basic education model.
However, Alausa has said the reports were untrue, adding that the new model was a mere proposal, which he made during the 2025 Extraordinary National Council of Education.
The minister saud he was misquoted by the media reports.
“The proposal seeks to migrate to 12 years of compulsory education while retaining the current 6-3-3 structure,” Alausa explained.
“A key aspect of this proposal is to eliminate the examination barrier between JSS and SSS, allowing for a seamless transition of students without the hurdles of an external assessment at that stage. However, this is still a subject of consultation and deliberation.”
According to him, the Federal Government will engage stakeholders such as the education policymakers, state governments, teachers, parents, and other key players before a final decision is made at the October 2025 National Council on Education Meeting.
“The Federal Government remains committed to policies that enhance access to quality education while aligning with global best practices,” Alausa said.
