The police in Anambra State have arrested a middle-aged man, identified as Mr Sunday Nwaka for setting his wife and mother of five ablaze.
The woman later succumbed to her injuries after suffering third degree burn.
The mother of six boys, Mrs Chioma Nwaka was seen in a viral video clip on social media on Tuesday, scampering for safety while alight.
The gruesome incident occurred in Abagana, Njikoka Local Government Area of the state.
It was gathered that the enraged poured fuel on her and immediately set her on fire during a misunderstanding relating to infidelity.
Source revealed that the suspect accused his wife of alleged infidelity, which led to both of them engaging in altercations and in the process, the man reached out for petrol, poured it on the victim and set her ablaze.
The man reported himself to the Abagana Divisional Police Station after the incident and was detained subsequently.
Another source who pleaded anonymity said, “the woman had returned home on Tuesday evening after the day’s outing with her supposed ‘secret lover’ when the angry husband confronted her.
“An altercation ensued during the confrontation and the man reached out for petrol and poured on his deceased wife and set her on fire.
“The husband who ignited her with fire, reported himself to the police station stating that the wife was prostituting with men in the same village and they were using it to abuse him in his home that they are using his wife.”
Although passersby and neighbours succeeded in dousing the fire, the victim had suffered significant burns.However, she was rushed to a medical facility in Enugwu-Ukwu, Njikoka Local Government Area, but was pronounced dead at around 3 a.m. on Wednesday.
According to the police, the suspect would soon be charged to court.
Dr Nonye Soludo, the wife of the Anambra State Governor, who was saddened by the development has vowed to ensure that the suspect is prosecuted.
She told newsmen in Awka, that she would follow up closely on the case and ensure that justice was served, described the incident as gruesome and evil.
The governor’s wife lamented the rising cases of domestic violence and abuse in many homes and called for serious social reformation, beginning with a systemic approach to fighting drug use and related problems.
“I saw the viral incident and directed an immediate visit to the scene of the incident,” Dr. Soludo said.“I have received details of the incident from the Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Mrs Ify Obinabo and her Health counterpart, Dr Afam Obidike, who visited the scene.
“I will ensure that the case is followed closely until justice is served,” she said.
“The state government takes issue of domestic violence and abuse as serious crimes, and no one who is found guilty of such offences will walk free.
“However, the state government will find the best approach to take care of the five children of the victim,” she said.
