Douye Diri, the Governor of Bayelsa State, has revealed how l a senior citizen from the state told him perform some rituals before he could become a governor.
The ‘Miracle Governor ‘, as Diri is called, made the revelation while speaking during the KOLGA (Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area) Annual Day of Thanksgiving in Sampou.
According to him, he was invited by the senior citizen to Abuja during his preparation to contest for the governorship of the state in 2020, and was told that for him to become a governor, he had to go through some rituals, which he declined due to his Christian faith.
However, he added that he had to part with $10,000 to the senior citizen.
“I thank God and also thank Apostle David Zilly Aggrey because he started this event. And because his prayers were heard, God made it possible to bring me in and today, it is by law that all Kolokuma/Opokuma people can gather to praise God,” Diri said.
“Let me reveal to you why it is important to thank God and have faith in Him. Sometime ago, a senior citizen of this country invited me to Abuja and asked me to perform certain sacrifices but I declined. I told him my faith in God will not allow me to do it. He got angry and told me I would never become governor.
“He told me that he had spent $10,000 to bring the people for the sacrifice and asked for a refund, which I obliged. When the Supreme Court’s pronouncement came, the man was shocked and could not call me. Sadly, he passed on after some time,” Diri said at the event.
He narrated that the marabouts to perform the rituals had already been invited from Senegal by the senior citizen but upon his refusal to play along, the man demanded for a refund of $10,000, which he claimed to have spent on bringing them. He gave him the money.
“The story I have narrated was witnessed by my deputy and a friend in Abuja as both of them accompanied me to visit the senior citizen. Kolokuma/Opokuma people have every reason to thank God,” the governor further said.
It is recalled that before becoming governor, Diri, who ran on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the 2019 governorship election, had initially lost to the then candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Chief David Lyon.
However, after challenging the result of the election, Diri ultimately won at the Supreme Court.
