Police arrest woman for allegedly abducting 5-yr-old boy at Lagos mosque

A woman accused of abducting a five-year-old boy, Mohammed Naziru, in the Iwaya area of Lagos has been apprehended by the police. The boy was reportedly taken while returning home from the mosque with his eight-year-old sister last Friday.

According to Vanguard Newspapers, the suspect, whose identity remains undisclosed, allegedly disguised herself in a hijab, blending in with worshippers who attended Jumat prayers at the local mosque. According to reports, she offered the older sibling ₦500 to purchase yogurt for her, seizing the opportunity to abscond with Naziru.

When the girl returned, she discovered both the woman and her brother had disappeared. Despite a thorough search of the community, Naziru was not found.

The turning point came on Monday, January 13, 2024, when the suspect was spotted in the area. Naziru’s sister recognized her and alerted the community. The suspect attempted to flee but was caught by a mob. She narrowly escaped being lynched, thanks to the swift intervention of officers from the Sabo Police Division.

Naziru’s father, Alhaji Idris Adamu, has made emotional pleas for the safe return of his son. “I pray every day for my son’s safety,” he said. “The woman must disclose where she took him.”

Adamu revealed that incriminating evidence was found on the suspect, including notes detailing instructions about administering an injection to put the boy to sleep and addresses where he could be hidden.

Following her arrest, the suspect reportedly claimed mental instability, a claim under investigation. Eyewitnesses noted that she had braids during her initial capture but later altered her appearance, further casting doubt on her mental health defense.

Detectives at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), where the case has been transferred, have confirmed plans to subject the suspect to a psychiatric evaluation.

Community members and Naziru’s family have urged the authorities to expedite investigations. “All I want is my son. She must tell us where she kept him,” pleaded Alhaji Adamu.

A man who initially identified himself as the suspect’s father was also detained but later released. Police have assured the public that all efforts are being made to locate Naziru and bring those involved to justice.
