A Queensland mother has been charged with poisoning her one-year-old daughter and posting videos of the infant’s distress in an attempt to raise funds via GoFundMe, police and local media reported Thursday.
The 34-year-old woman allegedly went to extreme lengths to conceal that she was administering prescription and pharmacy drugs to her baby without medical authorization, according to Queensland Detective Inspector Paul Dalton.
“Hospital staff in the Queensland capital Brisbane alerted police to their suspicions in October last year when the girl was there for treatment of a serious mental condition,” Dalton said.
The authorities took immediate action to safeguard the child, launching an investigation into the case. The woman, from Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, was widely reported by local media to be the child’s mother, though police have not officially confirmed this detail.

Dalton stated that the woman was accused of filming the baby’s “immense distress and pain” and posting these images online between August and October last year in order to solicit financial donations from her followers.
“Testing for unauthorized medicines allegedly returned a positive result this month,” police confirmed.
The woman raised just over Aus$60,000 (approximately US$37,000) through her GoFundMe campaign, which is now working to return the funds to donors, according to Dalton.
“There are no words to describe just how repulsive offences of this nature are,” Dalton remarked. “There is no excuse for hurting a child, particularly one so young that is totally dependent on adults to care and love for them.”
The woman, charged with 11 offenses, is scheduled to appear before the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Friday.
