Mudashiru Obasa, the speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly was on Monday impeached by the House for alleged gross misconduct and abuse of office.
The details of his impeachment remain sketchy, but the House has quickly replaced him with Mojisola Meranda.
Obasa has been in the eyes of the storm embattled since a petition was filed against him with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, in December 2024.
In the petition, the Progressive Youth Movement of Ikeja, Lagos State had accused Obasa of financial misconduct, breach of public trust, and abuse of office.
The former speaker was alleged to have used proxy companies to embezzle funds from the Lagos House of Assembly and violating due process and procurement regulations.
In yet another petition by the Lagos State Anti-Corruption Coalition, to the EFCC, the anti-graft agency was urged to investigate allegations of mismanaging N17 billion earmarked for constructing a gate at the Lagos State House of Assembly.
The petition by the Progressive Youth Movement alleged that the Speaker awarded N469 million contract for the Construction of Ikeja Local Government Secretariat to Orgnitek Consult Limited, which it said was one of the companies Obasa used to perpetrate his alleged fraudulent activities.
Furthermore , they accused the former Speaker of approving N200 million for thanksgiving at the Lagos State House of Assembly, an event they claimed should not have cost more than N2 million.
Obasa had also denied the charges against him, describing them as nonsensical.
