Amazon has said Dele Farotimi’s book, ‘Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System’, has hit the top spot as its Number one bestseller in global politics.
This is a fallout of the arrest if the activist lawyer on Tuesday and subsequent arraignment and remand in an Ekiti prison facility at the instance of legal luminary, Afe Babalola.
The book dwelt on the alleged systemic corruption within Nigeria’s judiciary.
Farotimi accused Babalola of undermining the country’s justice system by influencing court decisions through bribes and unwholesome practices.
The writer’s ordeal has been widely condemned, as Nigerians, who criticised the 93-year-old senior lawyer and university owner of misusing his clout to intimidate his opponents, see the detention as an affront on freedom of expression.
The controversy this has generated has catapulted the book to bestseller status on Amazon, leading to a rush by Nigerians to buy copies of the book.
The book is also trending online and people are being urged to go and buy their own copies.
Civil society groups, lawyers, and activists have dismissed the charges as an attack on Nigeria’s democracy.
Nigerians have always believed that the country’s judicial system is corrupt, as judges regularly give shocking judgements and even contradicting one another.
Not long ago, a serving senator stated in plenary how he often used his wife, a judge, to help his friends.
Interestingly, nothing came out that confession.
