The Igbo Diaspora king in the Republic of Ghana, His Royal Majesty, Eze Dr Chukwudi Jude Ihenetu, has joined other African leaders to congratulate Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Reginal Integration, Hon. Mrs. Shirley Ayorkor Botchwaey, on her election as the incoming Secretary-General of the Commonwealth of Nations.
Leaders of the 56 Commonwealth Nations meeting in Apia Samoa, elected Botchwey, as Secretary-General.
Botchwey is a 61-year-old former lawmaker, who has also served as Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister in the last seven years.
In a congratulatory message, which he personally signed and made available to his Country Director on Media Strategy and Communication, Njoku Macdonald Obinna, the Umuduruoha Amigbo Nwangele Imo State-born Ihenetu felicitated with the newly elected Commonwealth Secretary General, and expressed confidence in her ability to deliver, given her extensive career in public administration, diplomacy, foreign affairs and regional development.
The newly elected Commonwealth Secretary General is the second African to be elected to the plum office in its 75 years of existence, after Chief Emeka Anyaoku of Nigeria, who served in that capacity from July 1,1990, to March 31, 2000.
Eze Ihenetu trusts that considering her wealth of knowledge and track record of performance, Botchwey’s leadership experience will bring renewed energy to the Commonwealth’s effort to advance meaningful economic and political partnerships that drive development and amplify the bloc’s voice in global affairs.
He strongly maintains that Botchwey has the backing and support of the Igbo and Nigerians living in Ghana for the top Commonwealth job.
According to Njoku Macdonald Obinna, the Publisher of the 4th Estate Reporters,
the incoming scribe of the Commonwealth is expected to assume office on April 1, 2025.
