A House of Representatives member, Alex Ikwechegh, is being quizzed by the Federal Capital Territory Police Command for allegedly assaulting an e-hailing cab driver, Stephen Abuwatseya.
Ikwechegh, who represents Aba North & South Federal Constituency, is being interrogated at the FCT police Divisional Headquarters in Maitama.
The lawmaker was seen in a trending video, slapping the Bolt driver when he asked him to pay the delivery fee, querying the driver if he did not know who he was talking to and also threatened to make the driver “disappear” and nothing would happen.
Josephine Adeh, the command’s spokesperson, said in a statement on Monday the police had commenced investigation into the matter.
Adeh stated that preliminary investigation disclosed that Abuwatseya was delivering a package to Ikwechegh when a they disagreed the method of delivery.
“Alexander Ikwechegh, who represents the Aba North and South Federal Constituency in Abia State. The incident occurred on October 27, 2024, at a residence on Zamfara Crescent, Maitama, Abuja,” the police spokesperson disclosed.
“The FCT Police Command has received a report at the Maitama Divisional Headquarters regarding an incident involving a Bolt driver, Mr. Stephen Abuwatseya, and Hon. Alexander Ikwegh, who represents the Aba North and South Federal Constituency in Abia State. The incident occurred on October 27, 2024, at a residence on Zamfara Crescent, Maitama, Abuja.
“Preliminary investigations indicate that Mr Abuwatseya was delivering a package to Hon. Ikwegh when a dispute arose concerning the method of delivery. During this altercation, Mr. Abuwatseya was reportedly physically assaulted.
The FCT Police Command frowned at Ikwegh’s disregard for the office of the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and disparaging the police chief’s name by daring the driver to make calls through to him after slapping him.
“After allegedly slapping the victim, he reportedly remarked with contempt, “You can go ahead and call the Inspector General of Police,” demonstrating a troubling disregard for the authority of law enforcement.
“Currently, the suspect is at the Maitama Police Station undergoing questioning.”
She added that the FCT Commissioner of Police, Tunji Disu, has ordered a thorough investigation into the matter.
