The death of a student of Obafemi Grammar School, in Imeko Afon Local Government Area of Ogun State on Friday, has set the community on edge.
The student, who was identified as Ariyo Monday, died after a teacher allegedly flogged him and asked him to perform 162 frog jumps.In a video posted online by an activist, Justadetoun, the teacher had taken a trash can to Ariyo’s class and instructed the students not to break it.
However, Monday told the teacher that the trashcan was bought with the students’ money.
The teacher felt offended and reported it to the principal, who instructed her to punish the student.
Consequently, according to Justadetoun’s narratives, the deceased was given 164 lashes, causing him to collapse.
In the video, Ariyo was seen placed on a drip on the hospital bed, groaning in pain while struggling to talk.
However, Omolola Odutola, the police spokesperson, on Friday, confirmed the incident in the late hours of Friday, but added that contrary to the report, the deceased was beaten with 24 strokes of the cane and was made to do 162 frog jumps.
“The incident happened on October 15, 2024. The deceased was asked to do 162 frog jumps and was given 24 strokes of the cane. He was rushed to FMC Idi-Aba for medical attention, and he died today (Friday),” Odutola said.She also disclosed that Ariyo’s remains have been deposited at the Ayetoro mortuary for autopsy while awaiting investigation into the cause of death.
