Fmr NEC Chair, Prof. Humphrey Nwosu, is dead
Professor Humphrey Nwosu, the former chairman of the then National Electoral Commission, NEC, is dead, aged 83 years.
Nwosu oversaw the acclaimed 1993 elections, which is still reputed to be the freest and fairest election in Nigeria.
He was appointed in 1989 by the then Head of State, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida.
The NEC chairman was innovative in handling his job as the chairman of NEC, now known as the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, having introduced the unique the Open Ballot system.
This ensured that the 1993 electoral exercise was largely transparent, free and fair, as the June 12, 1993 election, is adjudged to be the freest and fairest election ever in Nigeria till date.
