Bloodbath in Anambra as suspected cultists unleash mayhem, kill 16

Nobody community in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State boiled over at the weekend, resulting in the death of no fewer than 16 persons.
The victims were mostly youths, who were suspected to belong to clashing  rival cult groups.
A video of the gory incident has gone viral, showing images of the dead person’s sprawled the ground.
A Facebook user, who posted the incident narrated: “Please avoid Nibo today. Many feared dead already. They said it’s cult clash. Our youths are dying in their numbers.”
 Another Facebook user, identified as Ifeyinwa Okeke,  also disclosed that the emergency ward at the state university’s teaching hospital was filled with victims.
“Our emergency ward at Amaku Teaching Hospital, Awka is filled with victims from there. It was terrible,” she wrote.
Another source said the attackers came in a black Lexus SUV, invaded an eatery shooting indiscriminately and killing many youths, who were celebrating the Onea Asatọ festival.

“It was like a war zone. The gunmen came out of nowhere, shooting everywhere. People were running for their lives, screaming and crying. It was chaos,” he said.

“They killed about eight persons in one location and drove to another closed to Eke Nibo market, where more people were killed.

“We are devastated. How can someone do this to us during our celebration? It’s heartbreaking. We urge the government to take immediate action. We cannot continue to live in fear. We need peace and security.”

SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the state police spokesman, confirmed the attack in a statement, linking the attack to cult activities.

“The Command is aware of a suspected cult-related clash today 20/10/2024 in Nibo, Awka South LGA and the Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam have ordered immediate deployment of additional operatives to the area for necessary action,” the statement read.

“Preliminary reports of the incidents are still sketchy as the Command calls on the witnesses of this incident to volunteer information that will help to identify the perpetrators for possible arrest. Be assured that information sent in this regard shall be treated with utmost confidentiality.”
