Private Ruth Ogunleye, the lady who accused a senior officer, Colonel I.B Abdulkareem, of sexual harassment was on Tuesday discharged by the Nigerian Army.
The female soldier had in January, taken to TikTok, via her handle @Ogunleyeruthsavage1, to accuse Col. Abdulkareem, Col. G.S Ogor, and Brig. Gen. I.B Solebo of harassing her sexually.
She claimed that Abdulkareem repeatedly assaulted her, administered injections against her will, forcibly evicted her from her residence, and confined her in a psychiatric hospital for rejecting his sexual advances
Following these allegations, the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs intervened, and the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, ordered a thorough investigation.
However, the Army’s spokesperson, Major-General Onyema Nwachukwu, stated that after reviewing the facts, testimonies, and evidence, the investigation found that Abdulkareem did not commit the alleged offenses.
Therefore, the Nigerian Army on Tuesday discharged her on medical grounds following an investigation.
Ogunleye’s discharge would enable her to receive a pension and other benefits for life.
Nwachukwu added that Ogunleye was recommended for discharge on medical grounds since 2022 due to concerns about her mental health.
According to him, medical evaluations confirmed that she was suffering from a condition that made her medically vulnerable, leading the Army to exercise leniency by discharging her instead of pursuing disciplinary actions.
Ogunleye has, however, pleaded that the Army should make report of its findings public.
