Monday Okpebholo, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has emerged as as the Edo state governor-elect, following his victory in Saturday’s gubernatorial election.
According to results declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, represented by the Returning Officer, Prof. Faruq Adamu Kuta, who is the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology (FUT), Minna, Niger State, Okpbholo won 11 out of the 18 local government areas of the state having polled the highest number of votes, 291,667 votes.
Asue Ighodalo, who flew the flag of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, took the second spot, with 247,274 votes while Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party, LP, came a distant third having scored 22,763 votes.
However, the result was received with mixed feelings as many believe it does not reflect the true wishes of Edo people.
The Coalition of Accredited Election Observers Group, has vowed to expose malpractice in the election.
In a statement issued the coalition’s National Coordinator, Dr. Onwubuya Abraham Breakforth, the coalition said it observed various malpractices, adding that the coalition has a total of 367 election observers across all the polling units and electoral wards to observe the conduct of the election.
“The coalition observes unbelievable logistics challenges where electoral materials don’t arrive at all, purportedly hacked, while some Wards receive late arrivals, while in some Wards, materials arrive incomplete with shortage of most sensitive materials,” the statement read.
“The coalition observed terrible malpractices and manipulation of results at some LGA collation centers in about 104 polling across twelve (12,) LGAs of Edo State.
“The coalition has on records in cameras, video clips of unbelievable compromise of the electoral process at some Wards, LGAs and the State Collation centre.
“The coalition is currently compiling all the observed evidence in figures and data before , during and after the election.”
