Pinnacle Oil, a filling station said to belong to Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State, was on Friday reportedly razed by unknown arsonists.
It was alleged that some arsonists, driving in a Toyota Corolla car carried out the act though the police suggest otherwise.
However, no fewer than four cars on the premises were affected by the raging fire.
Some personnel of the fire service and security operatives quickly mobilised to the scene located around the Agbani Road axis of the city.
Confirming the incident, the Enugu State Police Command said the fire might have been ignited by a leakage from one of the vehicles that were on queue to buy fuel.
According to DSP Daniel Ndukwe, the State Police spokesman: “A fire incident occurred at Pinnacle Filling Station, Agbani Road, Enugu, in the morning hours of today, Friday, September 20, 2024.
“The fire was immediately put out with the support of the personnel of both federal and state fire services, who promptly responded to the emergency situation.
“No life was lost. However, three vehicles on the queue to purchase fuel were torched, while normalcy has since been restored by the police.
“A preliminary investigation suggests that the fire may have been caused by fuel leakage from one of the vehicles buying fuel at the station.
“However, the Commissioner of Police, CP Kanayo Uzuegbu, who led police operatives to the scene, has ordered the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State CID to conduct a full-scale investigation into the incident.”
There were fears, however, that the incident could have been the work of arsonists believed to be associated with the pro-Biafra agitators or unknown gunmen.
Recall that the South-east region has been bedeviled by violent activities perpetrated by criminals masquerading as members of the Independent People of Biafra, IPOB, and its militia group known as the Eastern Security Network, ESN, agitating for the release of its incarcerated leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
However, IPOB has repeatedly absolved itself of involvement in the acts of violence, insisting that it is a non-violent organisation with the singular pursuit of achieving an independent Biafra republic from Nigeria.
