The Defence Headquarters, DHQ, on Friday announced that troops had killed 40 members of the dreaded Boko Haram group among whom is the dreaded bandit kingpin, Halilu Buzu, in Zamfara State.
The killing of Buzu is a major breakthrough in the ongoing fight against insurgency activities in the troubled North West region as well as a significant blow to the insurgents.
Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, the Director of Defence Information, DDI, in a statement made available to Defence Correspondents in Abuja said the bandits met their Waterloo in an ambush laid by Sector One Joint Task Force, North West (NW) Operation Hadarin Daji on the terrorist escape route along Gusau Funtua Road.
The statement also disclosed that arms and motorcycles were recovered from the bandits.
General Christopher Gwabin Musa, the Chief of Defence Staff, CDS, had on Friday paid an official visit to operational areas in Zamfara State in line with his commitment to addressing insecurity in the country.
Speaking at the Government House in Gusau, Musa applauded the governor for his support to the Armed Forces of Nigeria, AFN, and other security agencies in the state.
He assured that the AFN would protect and ensure that farmers had access to their farms without the interference of bandits, adding that the state has a dedicated, and committed team of security heads and bowed to crush the bandits. all
The statement also noted that the CDS urged the people to resist being used as informants for the bandits to truncate the efforts of security agencies but to rather provide vital information to the security agencies to help eliminate bandits.
Musa also disclosed that the Defence Headquarters-led operations in the state had changed, adding that they have become a theatre Command, with General officers Commanding as component Commanders, respectively, to enable for proper synergy and control between state actors.
The CDS promised to collaborate with state-owned security establishments and maintained that “we need positive men and women to help the process of achieving peace”.
He commended the 1 Brigade Nigerian Army responsible for ambushing and killing the scores of terrorists and charged them to develop a positive mindset to winning the war and pledged to provide necessary tools required to prosecute the fight.
The Zamfara State Governor, Dr. Dauda Lawal, thanked the CDS for finding time to travel by road from Abuja to Zamfara.
“My government is fully committed to cooperation with the military and other security agencies in the state,” the governor pledged.
Meanwhile, Nuhu Ribadu, the National Security Adviser, NSA, has stated insecurity would soon end in the country.
He praised the armed forces and security agencies for their efforts in combating insecurity, saying that their sacrifices had led to improvements in security.
Mr Ribadu noted that the Federal Government “is working around the clock to end insecurity, and it is only a matter of time before the entire country is secured”.
