Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has said he could abandon his presidential quest if he sees anyone that would do the job better.
Speaking on News Central TV which was aired on YouTube, Obi said he is only desperate to see a Nigeria that is working, adding that the country needs a strong leadership that could bring positive change in the next general election in 2027.
Responding to a question on his ambition considering other options in the face of talks about him and Rabiu Kwankwaso, the former two-term governor of Anambra State said: “Quite frankly, for me, I’m not desperate to be Nigeria’s president. I am desperate to see Nigeria work. If I see people who can do the work better, I will (consider aborting presidential ambition).
“I even have people who say I should not come out in 2027 and I said to them, offer yourself. And we will now put everybody on a scale.”
He also stated that he does not hangout thoughts of leaving the Labour Party but would be open to negotiations with anyone that wants them to come together.
“Yes, I would be here (at Labour Party), and if anybody is coming for us to negotiate or to come together, he must tell me what his purposes are.
“I will not join anybody for state capture or for winning the election. I want anybody to tell me how we are going to ensure that no child is left behind, how we are going to put those millions of out-of-school children back in school.”
Obi took Nigeria by storm in the 2023 presidential election where he placed third behind President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress, APC, and former vice president, Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
Many believed that the election was rigged.
However, Obi has moved on since then, concentrating instead on building nationwide structures for the next contest in 2027.
There had been speculations that his Labour Party is negotiating a merger with Atiku and the PDP and Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP.
He has since denied such rumours, saying there is nothing like that.
