The flood that ravaged Maiduguri, the Borno State capital on Tuesday, has left a lot of devastation on the North-east state.
Reports so far have revealed that at least 30 people died while over 400,000 others were displaced
Also, properties worth several billions of naira were damaged in the worst flooding in three decades according to the United Nations Human Rights Refugee Council and Maiduguri Metropolitan Council residents.
The National Emergency Management Agency traced the flood to the overflowing of Alau dam on the Ngadda River, 20km south of Maiduguri, following torrential rainfall.
It was gathered that the surging flood wreaked havoc across the city and did not even spare the palace of the Shehu of Borno, Umar Ibn Garbai El-Kanemi.
Also affected are houses, schools, and commercial and worship centres, the state secretariat, post office, cemetery, and the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital as well as the zoo where it also washed away 80 percent of animals at the Sanda Kyarimi Park zoo.
Prof Babagana Zulum, the Governor of Borno State, told newsmen that a third of Maiduguri was flooded, adding that an estimated one million people were affected.
The governor distributed cash and food to thousands of displaced persons at a camp and also revealed that the Federal Government allocated N3 billion for rehabilitation of the victims.
