Team Nigeria at the ongoing Paris at the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris, France on Saturday added a silver medal to its haul, courtesy of Flora Ugwunwa, who won in the women’s javelin throw event.
Ugwunwa competed in the women’s F54 category of the athletics event, and finished second with a throw of 19.26 metres behind Uzbekistan’s Nurkhon Kurbanova, who claimed the gold medal with a throw of 21.12m, setting a new World Record (WR) in the process, and also breaking the Paralympic Record set by Ugwunwa in 2016.
Elham Salehi, an Iranian, took the Bronze, recording a distance of 16.24m.
This was the third win for the 40-year-old Ugwunwa, having won 18.24m, with the fourth, fifth and sixth being 18.68m, 18.40m and 17.50m respectively.
She had previously won three consecutive Paralympic medals – two golds (Rio, Tokyo) and now Silver (Paris).
With Ugwunwa’s win Team Nigeria now has one gold, two silver and two bronze medals to occupy the 52nd position at the Games, which ends on Sunday.
