Eleven people have been killed, including five children, while 13 others were injured when a bus crashed into pupils gathered with their parents at a school gate in China on Tuesday morning, September 3.
The children were getting ready to start classes at a Tai’an City high school in China’s eastern Shandong province when a bus that was there to carry their classmates crashed into them just before 7am.
Five of the students and one parent died instantly. Video footage shared on social media shows parents cradling the bloodied bodies of their kids, with some lying lifeless beneath the bus outside Foshan Middle School.
The driver of the customised rental bus used for transporting students reportedly lost control before crashing into the waiting children.
According to China’s Xinhua news agency, the driver has been detained while police investigate the cause of the crash.
Those injured are in the hospital and remain in critical condition.
