Operatives of the Imo State Police Command have busted a kidnapping syndicate in the state and arrested five suspects.
The suspects were accused of terrorising residents in Obinze, Avu and environs as well as kidnapping a 26-year-old lady from her residence in Obinze, Owerri West Local Government Area.
The five suspects are all northerners and identified as: Umaru Usman, 40, from Mauree in Sokoto State; Abdul Ibrahim, 30, from Sokoto State; Jubrin Idris, 35, from Sokoto State;
Tukur Yau, 25, from Dawakinkudur in Kano State; and Musbau Sabo, 18, from Warsaw Local Government in Kano State.
A statement by Henry Okoye, police spokesman in the state disclosed that the Command responded to a reported kidnapping of a 26-year-old woman from her residence in Obinze, on August 18, 2024.
He added that the Commissioner of Police promptly deployed the Command’s anti-kidnapping unit with all available operational resources and intelligence not only to arrest the culprits but also to ensure the safe rescue of the victim.
The operatives raided the kidnappers’ hideout in a forest in Avu and succeeded in rescuing the victim unharmed and also apprehended the suspects.
Okoye also disclosed that one pump-action gun, five cartridges, two daggers, a cutlass, and various criminal charms were among items recovered from the suspects, adding that investigations into the matter were still ongoing to arrest the fleeing members of the gang and bring them to book.
