Justice Kudirat Motonmori Kekere-Ekun was on Friday sworn in as the 23rd Chief Justice of Nigeria.
President Bola Tinubu swore in Justice pending her confirmation by the Senate.
She took the oath of office and signed the oath register at 11.40 am at the Council Chamber of the State House, Abuja.
Kekere-Ekun succeeded Kayode Ariwoola, who bowed out on Thursday, upon attaining the mandatory retirement age of 70 years.
Speaking after her inauguration, Justice Kekere-Ekun pledged to tackle the shortcomings within the judiciary head-on to work collaboratively with fellow justices to drive meaningful change.
The new Chief Justice promised to address the pressing concerns surrounding appointments within the judiciary.
It will be recalled that the 66-year-old Justice Kekere-Ekun, was denied entry to the United States, following a 2020 controversial judgement that sacked the Governor Emeka Ihedioha of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and declared Senator Hope Uzodimma of the All Progressives Congress, APC, as Imo governor, a reason some civil society groups are opposed to her ascension to the exalted office.
Nevertheless, her appointment is seen as a progressive step forward in promoting gender equality within the nation’s highest judicial office.
Justice Kekere-Ekun brings a wealth of experience and a distinguished career in the judiciary to the role and is expected to influence key legal reforms and further strengthen the independence and integrity of Nigeria’s judicial system.
