A 40-year-old woman, who could not come to terms with her divorce by her husband has taken her own life in Guri Local Government Area of Jigawa.
The woman whose name was not disclosed set herself ablaze and burnt beyond recognition.
DSP Lawan Shiisu, the Police spokesman in the state, confirmed the incident in a statement in Dutse, on Friday.
He said the woman resided in Garin Mallam village, where she allegedly used petrol to set herself on fire.
According to him: “On Thursday at about 0740hrs, the command received a heartbreaking and pitiful incident from Guri LGA that a woman, aged 40 of Garin Mallam village, poured petrol on her body, set herself ablaze and got burnt beyond recognition on the outskirts of the village.
“Following this report, a squad of officers from the Guri Divisional Police Headquarters raced to the scene and verified the incident.
“The officers took the charred body to the hospital and later released the corpse to the family for burial.”
Shiisu explained that preliminary investigation revealed that following her divorce by her husband, the deceased experienced depression for a few months.
He added that the Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Ahmadu Abdullahi, advised people to always submit their affairs to Almighty Allah for a way out and to always go for counselling to avoid such tragic incidents.
