Alhaji Muhammad Bawa, the Sarkin Kudun Gatawa in Gatawa District of Sokoto State, has reportedly died in the captivity of bandits.
The news of his death was attributed to one of his sons who claimed that the family had been informed about the sad development.
The monarch had been abducted about a month ago but was recently seen in a viral video appealing to the Sokoto State Government, Sokoto Sultanate Council, his relatives and friends to help pay ransom for his freedom before the deadline set by his captors.
Alhaji Bawa said that the bandits had issued a deadline for the payment of ransom and failure of which they would kill him.
Bawa had bemoaned the lack of government response to his abduction. His abductors initially demanded N1 billion ransom but later reduced it to N500 million
In the disheartening video, the 74-year-old monarch was seen in a bloodstained white garment with his hands bound.
Bawa made an emotional plea to his relatives, well-wishers, and community leaders, saying, “Today is the final day. If they want to assist me, they should do so now. Even the bandits are tired; they have done their best, but there is no response from the government.”
Aminu Boza, the lawmaker representing Sabon Birni in the Sokoto State House of Assembly, had verified the video’s authenticity, confirming that the individual in the footage was indeed the traditional ruler.
