Joe Ajaero, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has been summoned by the police over alleged terrorism financing.
The police invitation issued on Monday, August 19, 2024, and signed by Assistant Commissioner of Police, Adamu Mua’zu on behalf of the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Intelligence Response Team, IRT, requested Ajaero to appear at the IRT office in Abuja on Tuesday, August 20 (today) where he would be interrogated by a team of the IRT by 10 a.m.
The interrogation will centre on his alleged involvement in a case of criminal conspiracy, terrorism financing, treasonable felony, subversion and cybercrime.
“This office is investigating a case of criminal conspiracy, terrorism financing, treasonable felony, subversion, and cybercrime in which you were mentioned,” the police invitation read.
“You are therefore invited to an interview with the undersigned on Tuesday, 20th August 2024, at 10:00 hrs prompt, at IRT Complex, Old Abattoir by Guzape Junction, Abuja, through the Team Leader with the telephone no 08035179870, in connection with the above investigation.
“Be informed that in the event of failing to honour this letter, this office will have no alternative than to issue a warrant of arrest against you, please.”
Recall that security operatives had raided the NLC secretariat at the Central Business District in Abuja on August 7.
The Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, in a statement on August 9, had disclosed that the police action had no connection with the NLC, adding that a suspect was traced to the NLC secretariat.
However, the Congress had an emergency National Executive Council, NEC, meeting on August 10 and condemned the raid on its secretariat.
The NLC, in a communique issued after the meeting, alleged that some of its members were arrested and demanded their release.
It also condemned the police’s explanation of the alleged invasion, saying the raid was intended to provoke the Organised labour.
