Senator George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, has been appointed head of a 10-man inter-ministerial committee to enforce the Supreme Court judgement on local government autonomy.
Recall that the apex court had in a landmark judgement on July 11, 2024, granted financial autonomy to the 774 local governments in Nigeria
Consequently, the Federal Government has inaugurated
Akume committee with a mandated to ensure that local governments in the country are granted full autonomy to operate optimally without interference of state governors.
Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information & Public Relations in the SGF Office, said in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja, the committee was inaugurated by the SGF.
It noted that the committee constituted part of the President Bola Tinubu-led administration to give appropriate implementation to the provisions of the Constitution.
The statement named the members of the committee, including the SGF, who will serve as the chairman, with the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, as a member.
Other members are: Attorney General of the Federation & Minister of Justice, Minister of Budget & Economic Planning, Accountant General of the Federation, Governor, Central Bank of Nigeria, Permanent Secretary (Federal Ministry of Finance) and Chairman, Revenue Mobilisation Allocation & Fiscal Commission as well as the representative of state governors and representatives of local governments, respectively.
