Residents of the area of Lagos were horrified when an unnamed man allegedly killed his eight- year-old son for misplacing sewing thread.
The suspect had reportedly wanted to use the thread only to discover that the minor had misplaced it. Enraged, he allegedly poured petrol on the boy at about 10:00 a.m. on August 5.
However, on realising the gravity of his action on the boy, his sister gave him some palm oil to drink, which failed to reverse the situation until the boy became unconscious.
Residents rushed the child to a hospital in the area for medical treatment where he was pronounced dead.
The suspect could be seen in an inaudible viral video on Tuesday, kneeling before police officers and residents and explaining what pushed him into the crime.
Benjamin Hundeyin, the spokesperson of the state police command, confirmed the incident, saying: “A report was filed on August 5, 2024, alleging that a father poured petrol on his son’s face and pushed him after the boy misplaced his sewing thread.
“The boy lost consciousness, and his sister gave him palm oil. After consuming it, he began vomiting, and he was subsequently rushed to the hospital.
“The doctors on duty confirmed him as being brought in dead. His body has been taken to a general hospital in Lagos for an autopsy. The suspect will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Yaba for further investigation.”
