A dispute has erupted between protest organisers and police over the location of a planned protest at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium.
According to a tweet by The Cable on August 1, 2024, police officers instructed the organizers to move the protest inside the stadium, citing a court order.
However, the organisers have refused to comply, and the protesters are currently gathered in front of the stadium.
The conflict stems from differing interpretations of the court order.
Police insist that the order mandates the protest be held within the stadium to ensure safety and order, while organisers argue that their right to peaceful assembly includes the choice of location.
The Cable’s tweet highlighted the tension, stating, “Protest organisers and police argue over moving the protest inside the stadium.
Police officers instructed the organisers to enter the stadium, based on a court order — but the organisers refused.”
As the standoff continues, the situation remains tense, with both sides showing no signs of backing down.
The police are maintaining a strong presence at the scene, and the protesters are steadfast in their decision to remain outside the stadium, emphasising their commitment to their cause.
