Onyeka Onwenu, famous Nigerian singer, songwriter, and actress has passed away, aged 72 years.
The Elegant Stallion, as she was fondly called, died on Tuesday shortly after performing at a friend’s birthday party in Lagos.
According to sources close to the family, Onwenu took ill on stage where she performed at the birthday of Mrs. Stella Okoli of Emzor Pharmaceuticals but suddenly collapsed soon after returning to her seat.
Emergency responders swiftly arrived and rushed her to Reddington Hospital on Victoria Island, where she was later pronounced dead.
It is not yet known what caused her death.
The celebrated multi-talented singer, songwriter, actress, journalist and politician was born on May 31, 1952.
Onwenu’s music, which blended genres including highlife, reggae, and pop, often addressed social and political issues. Some of her most popular songs include “One Love,” “Iyogogo,” and “Ekwe.”
Onwenu, who was also known for her political involvement and activism, once served as the chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture.
She was appointed Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer of the National Centre for Women Development.
Before her death, Onwenu had plans to produce a movie chronicling her experiences in the music industry spanning over four decades.
