Nigeria’s iconic songstress, Onyeka Onwenu, had made plans for her burial long before she passed away on Tuesday night in Lagos.
The Elegant Stallion, as she was fondly called, had revealed her wishes for how she would like to be remembered and buried in an opinion article published in Premium Times in 2021.
According to her, her burial should be shorn of needless flourish.
She wrote: “Do it quickly, quietly and privately.”
The multifaceted Onwenu, who was not only a celebrated musician, actress and activist said she wants her loved ones to “mourn, yes but not excessively.”
“Celebrate me with prayers, lunch or dinner afterwards. Share some jokes about me and laugh.
“Make merriment and then go about your business. If my friends want to celebrate me, they should do so while I am alive, so that I can enjoy it with them, not when I am gone and have no idea about this. That is me Onyeka Onwenu,” she said.
She died on Tuesday night at the Reddington Hospital in Lagos after collapsing at the birthday party of Mrs Stella Okoli of Emzor Pharmaceuticals.
