The Lagos State Government has charged the residents to remain calm despite the flooding caused by the torrential rainfall experienced throughout the state on Wednesday.
Mr Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, assured the residents that efforts had been deployed to address the situation and urged those in low-lying areas to as a matter of necessity relocate to higher grounds at this period to safeguard lives and properties.
The affected areas include Epe, Eredo, Bogije, Labora, Abijon, Sangotedo, Awoyaya, and Ibeju-Lekki.
Tragically, a primary six pupil named Joshua was swept away by floodwaters in the Ikosi, Ketu area while some area boys took advantage of the crisis, charging passers-by N100 to use a makeshift bridge at the Tradefair under-bridge in Lagos.
“Lagos has experienced about nine hours of non-stop rainfall since the early hours of Wednesday,” Wahala said.
“This is coupled with the heavy rainfall which the state has been experiencing daily since the previous week resulting in the rise in level of the Lagos lagoon,” Wahab said.
The commissioner added that the state had deployed officials of the Emergency Flood Abatement Gang to major black spots including Iyana-Oworo which had been cleared of all blockages.
Wahab also vowed that the state government would continue to demolish illegal structures, following the devastating flooding that submerged numerous houses, communities, and properties in Lagos.
Responding to a post on X (formerly Twitter), Wahab accused the user of pushing an ethnic narrative and reiterated that the removal of structures obstructing water flow would continue irrespective of the owners’ status.
“Many more structures obstructing the free flow of rainwater in Lagos will still be removed, irrespective of who or how highly placed the owners are. Prepare your mind to make your usual aimless and empty noise. If turning it into an ethnic narrative makes you happy, go ahead! TW,” he posted.
