A Federal High Court sitting in Kano has set aside the Kano Emirate Council Law used in dethroning Ado Bayero and other emirs in the state.
Justice Abdullahi Muhammad Liman in his ruling on Thursday, June 29, 2024, set aside the action of the Kano State Government and ordered the parties to maintain the status quo.
He faulted all steps taken by the Kano State government in repealing the Kano Emirates Council Law.
The Kano State House of Assembly had repealed the old law, which was promulgated under former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf promptly implemented it, dethroning Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero as Emir of Kano, and restoring the former emir, Muhammadu Lamido Sanusi to the throne.
Yusuf also reversed the creation of four emirates, Bichi, Rano Karaye, and Gaya by the now repealed law.
Aminu Babba Danagundi, a kingmaker, and Sarkin Dawaki Babba in the former emirate council, kicked against the law, challenging it in court.
He had prayed the court through his counsel, Chikaosolu Ojukwu (SAN), to upturn the law and declare it null and void.
