What appeared to be the flourishing success story of a wealthy spare parts dealer in Anambra State has now unraveled into a shocking tale of alleged kidnapping, violence and organised crime, reviving memories of the notorious exploits of convicted kidnap kingpin Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike, aka Evan.
Popularly known as “Fabulous” within the bustling Mgbuka spare parts market in Obosi, the businessman was widely regarded as one of the successful young dealers in the automotive trade, living a lavish lifestyle that attracted admiration from many traders and residents.
But beneath the façade of wealth and influence, security operatives allege that the businessman was secretly running a deadly kidnapping network from a heavily fortified luxury duplex allegedly designed to conceal criminal activities.
Police sources disclosed that investigations began after operatives traced a stolen vehicle to the suspect’s residence during a surveillance operation carried out on Sunday morning.
According to security reports, officers who approached the compound were met with heavy gunfire allegedly opened by members of the gang from inside the premises, leading to a fierce exchange.
During the confrontation, a police officer was reportedly killed before reinforcements arrived at the scene. Security operatives eventually overpowered the gang after the suspects allegedly ran out of ammunition while attempting to escape through the fence surrounding the compound.
The suspect, identified by residents and traders as Fabulous, was reportedly arrested while trying to flee the premises.
What operatives allegedly uncovered inside the compound has since sent shockwaves across Anambra State.
Security sources said eight kidnapped victims were rescued from different parts of the property, including a medical doctor identified as the Chief Executive Officer of Crown Hospital, Nkpor, who had reportedly been abducted days earlier.
Investigators also alleged that the gang demanded as much as ₦500 million ransom for some victims held in captivity.
Authorities further claimed that parts of the compound were being used as detention cells for kidnapped victims, while stolen vehicles were allegedly dismantled and sold as spare parts through criminal channels linked to the market network.
Residents were particularly stunned by revelations that the suspect allegedly operated a shrine within the compound while maintaining an outward image of a respected businessman.
Sources within the community further alleged that the suspect’s wife was aware of the activities allegedly taking place inside the residence, though authorities are expected to determine the extent of any involvement during ongoing investigations.
The discovery triggered widespread outrage in the community, with angry youths and residents storming the area shortly after news of the operation spread.
Several structures and properties linked to the suspect were reportedly set ablaze by furious mobs before authorities intervened.
By Tuesday, the Anambra State Government reportedly moved in to demolish buildings connected to the alleged criminal network, as part of broader efforts to dismantle kidnapping infrastructure across the state.
The dramatic fall of the businessman has once again reignited debate over the growing sophistication of kidnapping syndicates in Nigeria, where some suspects allegedly hide behind legitimate businesses and extravagant lifestyles to evade suspicion.
Security analysts say the case mirrors patterns seen in previous high-profile kidnapping operations, involving wealthy individuals who used social status, business fronts and strategic community influence to mask criminal enterprises.
For many residents, the unfolding scandal serves as another chilling reminder that behind some displays of sudden wealth may lie darker realities capable of destabilising entire communities.
