In a vibrant and politically charged gathering held at Ehime Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State, women coordinators from across the six local governments in Okigwe Zone and political parties converged in a solidarity meeting that has now become a defining moment in the growing momentum behind the Senate ambition of Attorney Charles Onyirimba.
The meeting, which was attended by women coordinators of the various local governments in Okigwe zone, and some stakeholders, was described as “a turning point in the political awakening of the zone,” with participants unanimously declaring their readiness to mobilise other women , homes, markets, churches, and social networks in support of Onyirimba’s candidacy.
Speaking on behalf of the coordinators, the women leaders expressed deep concern over years of neglect, broken promises, and the recycling of political actors who, according to them, have failed to translate mandates into meaningful development. They insisted that the present moment demands “a new kind of leadership anchored on credibility, capacity, and compassion.”
They praised Onyirimba as a “listening candidate with a reformist vision,” noting his background as a legal practitioner and public advocate as evidence of his preparedness to confront systemic issues, affecting the senatorial district.
Many speakers emphasised that women, as the backbone of grassroots politics, would no longer remain passive observers but active drivers of electoral change.
In a unanimous resolution, the coordinators pledged “unalloyed support” for Onyirimba’s Senate ambition, committing to structured mobilisation across villages, market squares, and community associations. They further announced plans to establish ward-by-ward enlightenment teams aimed at sensitising voters on the need for issue-based politics and credible representation.
The Transformation Agenda Women Leader, Mrs Favour Nwelue, who hosted the women thanked them for coming and urged them not to relent in mobilising other women, and men, in their various local governments for the good cause of liberating Okigwe Zone from forces of strangulation.
The meeting ended with a resounding declaration: that the coming political season will not be business as usual, and that the women of Okigwe Zone stand firmly positioned as a decisive force in shaping the future of the senatorial district.
