President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointment of Professor Segun Aina as the new Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, in a move that signals a fresh generational and technological shift in the leadership of Nigeria’s tertiary admissions system.
The announcement was made on Thursday in a statement issued by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga.
According to the statement, Professor Aina will assume office upon the completion of the tenure of outgoing Registrar, Professor Is-haq Oloyede, whose second term is expected to end on July 31, 2026.
At 39, Aina is set to become the youngest registrar in JAMB’s history, a development that has already drawn attention to the administration’s increasing tilt toward younger technocrats with strong digital and engineering backgrounds.
Aina is currently a Professor of Computer Engineering at Obafemi Awolowo University. He studied Computer Systems Engineering at the University of Kent, where he earned a Bachelor of Engineering degree, before proceeding to obtain a Master’s degree in Internet Computing and Network Security as well as a PhD in Digital Signal Processing from Loughborough University. He also attended the Senior Management Programme at Lagos Business School.
His professional profile reflects over 15 years of experience working at the intersection of technology, public-sector systems, and institutional reform. He has advised both federal and state governments on digital transformation, examination systems design, and operational efficiency, with a particular focus on secure and scalable ICT infrastructure for public institutions.
The Presidency noted that Aina began his early exposure to JAMB processes during his National Youth Service, where he gained firsthand experience in admissions and examination administration. He has also reportedly consulted for other major examination bodies, including the National Examinations Council and the National Business and Technical Examinations Board, particularly on issues relating to examination integrity, ICT systems, and process optimisation.
His appointment is widely seen as part of a broader reform direction aimed at strengthening digital governance within key federal agencies. With Nigeria’s growing reliance on computer-based testing and increasing concerns around system reliability and admission transparency, expectations are high that the new registrar will deepen technological innovation within JAMB while consolidating on reforms introduced by his predecessor.
President Tinubu expressed confidence that the incoming registrar would build on the achievements of the outgoing administration and further modernise the operations of the examination body through innovation, institutional strengthening, and improved service delivery.
