The Police Service Commission (PSC) has approved the dismissal of an Assistant Superintendent of Police, ASP Nuhu, alongside four other officers, following their alleged involvement in the fatal shooting of a 28-year-old man, Mene Ogidi, in Effurun, Delta State.
The decision, confirmed by the Nigeria Police Force on Sunday, comes after the conclusion of internal disciplinary proceedings which found the officers culpable in the incident that occurred on April 26, 2026.
Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Okon Placid, disclosed that the dismissals take immediate effect. He further revealed that the case file has been transmitted to the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation for legal review and prosecution.
According to him, the Force is committed to ensuring that the matter is pursued to its logical conclusion in a court of competent jurisdiction.
Preliminary findings by the Police Monitoring Unit indicated that the officers engaged in acts of professional misconduct, abuse of office, and behavior capable of breaching public peace—actions that ultimately led to the unlawful killing of the victim.
The police reiterated that no suspicion of criminal activity justifies extrajudicial measures, emphasizing that every suspect is entitled to due process as guaranteed by law.
Further details revealed that the deceased had received a parcel from Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, which was later discovered to contain a locally fabricated pistol and live ammunition. He was reportedly apprehended by civilians and handed over to the police.
However, instead of adhering to established arrest and investigative procedures, ASP Nuhu allegedly shot the unarmed suspect.
Authorities also confirmed that other individuals connected to the incident, including the courier who delivered the parcel and two vigilante members, are currently at large, with efforts underway to track and arrest them.
The victim’s remains have been deposited in a mortuary, with an autopsy expected to form part of the prosecutorial process.
While extending condolences to the bereaved family, the police assured the public that justice would be pursued without bias, stressing that no officer, regardless of rank, will be shielded from accountability.
