Germany has reportedly rejected the appointment of former Aviation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode, as Nigeria’s ambassador, dealing an early diplomatic setback to the foreign posting approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The rejection, said to have occurred shortly after his deployment to Berlin was announced on March 13, 2026, was linked to concerns over Fani-Kayode’s history of incendiary public comments. German authorities reportedly flagged his past remarks as “divisive ethnocentric, tribalistic, and religious fundamentalist,” describing them as potentially destabilising and inconsistent with the expectations of a diplomatic envoy.
Fani-Kayode’s nomination had already stirred debate within Nigeria’s political space, given his long record of outspoken criticism against President Tinubu prior to his eventual alignment with the ruling camp. Once a fierce opponent, he had previously issued blistering attacks against the president, making his sudden elevation to an ambassadorial role both surprising and controversial.
The situation appears to have been further complicated by a recent diplomatic misstep, involving the United Kingdom’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Richard Montgomery.
At a Ramadan gathering in Abuja, Fani-Kayode reportedly made remarks considered insulting toward the British envoy, an incident that may have reinforced concerns among foreign governments about his diplomatic temperament.
Although there has been no official statement from either Berlin or Abuja, sources suggest the Nigerian government may quietly move to reassign him to another country, with South Africa being mentioned as a possible alternative destination.
Fani-Kayode has yet to publicly respond to the reports.
The development underscores a critical reality in modern diplomacy: past rhetoric, especially in an era of digital permanence, can carry real consequences. For Nigeria, it raises fresh questions about the criteria for ambassadorial appointments and the balance between political loyalty and international credibility.
