Nigeria’s quest for a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup has come to a definitive end, following confirmation from FIFA of the six nations that will compete in the inter-confederation play-off tournament, with DR Congo officially listed as Africa’s representative.
In an accreditation notice circulated to media organisations ahead of the tournament, FIFA outlined the competition’s structure and confirmed the participating countries.
The announcement effectively closes the door on Nigeria’s lingering hopes of a reversal, as there was no indication of any alteration to the previously determined qualifiers.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) had earlier mounted a formal protest after the decisive CAF play-off encounter in November 2025. The tie ended 1–1 in regulation time before Nigeria fell short in the penalty shootout.
Following the defeat, the NFF alleged that DR Congo fielded ineligible players during the match and petitioned FIFA to review the outcome.
The federation’s appeal sought to overturn the result and reinstate the Super Eagles into the inter-confederation play-offs, a final pathway to the expanded 2026 World Cup. However, FIFA’s latest communication makes no reference to any pending disciplinary decision or adjustment to the list of qualified teams, signalling that the original verdict stands.
In its official statement, FIFA confirmed: “The FIFA World Cup 2026 Play-Off Tournament will see six teams fight it out for the final two places at the FIFA World Cup 2026™, to be staged in Canada, Mexico and the United States across 16 Host Cities.”
The governing body further stated: “All of the six teams have now been decided, with Bolivia, Congo DR, Iraq, Jamaica, New Caledonia and Suriname confirmed as qualifiers.”
With DR Congo’s name formally included among the six, Nigeria’s protest appears to have yielded no change in outcome.
The absence of any qualifying amendment in FIFA’s communication effectively confirms that the Central African nation retains Africa’s slot in the tournament thus officially dashing Nigeria’s dream of appearance in the 2026 World Cup.
