In a dramatic escalation of tensions between Washington and Tehran, former U.S. President Donald Trump has claimed that 49 of Iran’s most senior leaders were killed in a joint U.S.-Israeli air operation conducted over the weekend.
Speaking during an interview with Bret Baier on Fox News, Trump described the operation, reportedly code-named “Operation Epic Fury”, as an “amazing” intelligence and military feat. According to him, U.S. intelligence agencies had precise knowledge of a high-level meeting of Iran’s leadership and the exact location where it was being held.
Trump further alleged that Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was meeting with members of his inner circle for breakfast on the morning of the strike. He suggested that the gathering took place in broad daylight under the assumption that it would be safe from attack, a miscalculation, he implied, that proved fatal.
The claims come against the backdrop of years of strained relations between the United States and Iran, particularly following the U.S. withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal and subsequent cycles of sanctions, proxy confrontations, and regional flashpoints. Israel has also repeatedly warned that it would not allow Iran to develop nuclear weapons capability, maintaining a long-standing shadow conflict with Tehran involving covert operations and targeted strikes.
As of now, there has been no independent confirmation from Iranian authorities regarding the reported deaths, and details surrounding the alleged operation remain contested. If verified, the strike would mark one of the most consequential blows to Iran’s leadership structure in modern history, with potentially far-reaching implications for Middle Eastern stability and global security dynamics.
