Nigeria’s electoral umpire has formally set the stage for the next general elections, announcing key dates and clarifying confusion that trailed earlier speculative reports.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Friday unveiled the official timetable and schedule for the 2027 general elections, reaffirming its constitutional mandate to conduct and supervise elections into public offices across the federation.
At a press briefing in Abuja, INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, dismissed circulating claims suggesting that the Commission had secretly released an election timetable prior to the formal announcement. He described such reports as inaccurate and urged political actors and the public to rely only on verified communications issued by the Commission.
Constitutional Backing and Legal Framework
According to the INEC chairman, the release of the timetable aligns strictly with the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Electoral Act, which mandate the Commission to publish notices of election well ahead of polling dates.

Key Dates Announced
Under the approved schedule:
Presidential and National Assembly elections will hold on February 20, 2027.
Governorship, State Houses of Assembly, and other outstanding elections are slated for March 6, 2027.
The Commission noted that the staggered arrangement follows established practice, enabling smoother logistics, deployment of personnel, and improved coordination of security agencies.
