Anthony Joshua, the famous former world boxing champion, on Monday cheated death after being involved in a fatal road accident in Makun, Ogun State.
The crash occurred along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway near Danco Filling Station when a Lexus SUV reportedly collided with a stationary truck. The vehicle, bearing registration number KRD 850 HN, was said to be conveying Joshua at the time of the incident. The exact cause of the accident remains under investigation.
Eyewitnesses said the boxer sustained minor injuries and was promptly rescued from the wreckage. However, the accident proved fatal for two persons who were confirmed dead at the scene.
News of the incident has triggered an outpouring of concern from fans across social media, many expressing relief over Joshua’s survival and sympathy for the victims. As of the time of filing this report, efforts to obtain official comments from Akinbiyi Babatunde, the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE) Commandant, were unsuccessful.
Meanwhile, the Lagos State Government said emergency responders had been deployed to related incidents across the state. The Commissioner for Information, Gbenga Omotosho, confirmed that rescue services were actively responding to emergencies.
In a similar and tragic development, another Lexus RX300 SUV rammed into five children in Lekki Phase 1, Lagos, leaving one child suspected dead and four others critically injured.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service (LSFRS) disclosed that the incident occurred on Sunday at about 2:31 p.m. at Wole Olateju Crescent, off Admiralty Road, in Eti-Osa Local Government Area. Firefighters from the Oniru Fire Station were dispatched following a distress call.
According to the LSFRS Controller-General, Margaret Adeseye, the SUV, with registration number GGE 750 BM, reportedly lost control while speeding and crashed into five male children aged between eight and 13 who were standing at the gate of a residence. Four of the children were rescued alive and rushed to a nearby hospital by passersby, while a nine-year-old boy was suspected dead at the scene.
The damaged vehicle was subsequently towed to the Maroko Police Station, where the police have taken over investigations.
In a separate incident later the same day, firefighters from the Ajegunle Fire Station rescued two adult men trapped inside a broken-down fuel tanker opposite Ecobank in Apapa at about 4:47 p.m. The victims were safely extricated and taken to a hospital for medical treatment.
Ms Adeseye commended the swift response of emergency personnel and reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to the protection of lives and property across Lagos State.
