President Bola Tinubu was on Sunday re-elected as Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of States and Government for another one-year tenure.
The president’s fellow Heads of Government in the West African sub-regional unanimously re-elected him to continue for another one-year tenure at the 65th Ordinary Session of the Authority held at the State House, Abuja, on Sunday.
His current tenure is due to end on July 9, 2024.
In his acceptance speech, Tinubu said: “I have accepted to continue to deliver on this service with the great men and women on this democratic journey, to serve our interest and build democratic values on the structure we inherited.”
He first emerged as Chairman of the Authority at the 63rd Ordinary Session of the regional bloc held last July in Bissau, the capital of Guinea-Bissau.
Tinubu’s leadership of ECOWAS had faced daunting challenges during his tenure, following military coups in Niger Republic, Burkina Faso, Mali, and Guinea.
However, it also witnessed a successful election in Senegal in 2024.
Tinubu’s challenge may be what to do with the three members of the group that have broken away.
The military juntas in Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mali had on Saturday, July 6, officially flagged off their own group, which they called Sahel Alliance, during their meeting in Niamey, Niger’s capital, hence severing ties with ECOWAS.
