The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, PDP, on Wednesday reinstated Samuel Anyanwu as the party’s National Secretary.
Ambassador Iliya Damagum, the Acting National Chairman of the party, announced the development at a press briefing in Abuja.
Damagum, alongside Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, former Senate President Bukola Saraki, and other key stakeholders, said the decision to reinstate Anyanwu, an ally of Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, into the National Working Committee, NWC, was not an easy one.
The acting party chair also announced that the party’s planned NEC meeting, had been cancelled.
Instead, Damagun said: “We will have an expanded Caucus, at the next Caucus we will take a decision leading to a proper NEC.
“Anyanwu is resuming as the National Secretary, that is why I said it was a critical decision. Like INEC said they don’t have our notice, so what we will have on June 30 is an extended Caucus.”
Anyanwu’s insistence on retaining his position as the PDP national scribe, after leaving to contest the Imo governorship position, which he lost, has been at the centre of the protracted crisis, rocking the former ruling party.
He had been locked out of the National Secretariat in Tuesday by the party’s workers, who staged a mass walkout in protest against Anyanwu’s attempt to forcibly reclaim his position as national secretary.
The protest came after the party’s National Working Committee, NWC, appointed Setonji Koshodeo as acting National Secretary, an appointment the staff had earlier pledged to support.
However, the party’s hands seemed to have been forced when the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Mahmood Yakubu, told the party leaders in a meeting to put their house in order.
