Sheriff Oborevwori, the Governor of Delta State has defected to the All Progressives Congress, APC.
The governor left the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, on which platform he contested and was elected governor alongside major stakeholders of the party in the state, following weeks of speculations about the move.
This was also coming after his predecessor in office, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, told his supporters that he would also be leaving the PDP.
Oborevwori defection followed a closed-door meeting at the Government House in Asaba, the state capital on Wednesday and was confirmed by Sir Festus Ahon,
his Chief Press Secretary.

Ahon said the governor consulted widely  with political stakeholders before the decision in the interest of Delta State.

Aniagwu Charles, the Delta Commissioner of Information,  and Sen. James Manager also confirmed the development in a press briefing addressed by the duo.

According to Aniagwu, the move became necessary to “cement the development in our state, to build the bond of love that has existed in our state, to further advance the course of security and welfare of our people, and to a very large extent, ensure that development in Delta because every politician is local, is not truncated.

“And in taking that decision, we came to the inevitable conclusion that moving out of the PDP is very, very necessary for us to be able to collaborate with our kiths and kins and build that state that every Deltan can be proud of. We believe that what is happening at the state of the PDP is akin to that palm wine whose states have changed and there was a need for us to change the drinking pattern. And that is why this decision has been taken unanimously by leaders and stakeholders of the party.

“And by the grace of God, on Monday next week, we will be able to make a very big statement as to the fact that we are moving into the APC.”

Adding his voice to the incident, Senator James Manager described the move as expedient  at this time of our political history.

“Who is who in PDP Delta was in the meeting, the Governor Oborevwori, Dr ifeanyi Okowa and the speaker Delta State House of Assembly,” he said.

In attendance at the enlarged shareholders meeting at the Government House Asaba, we’re the past and current National Assembly members, the Chairmen of the local government councils and the Delta State executive council members of the PDP.
