The Senate on Tuesday confirmed Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede as the substantive Chief of Army Staff, COAS.
Oluyede’s confirmation followed the request of President Bola Tinubu in a letter read on the floor of the Senate on November 26, which was later referred to the Committee on Army for screening.
Following the illness of the former COAS, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, Tinubu had on 30 October appointed Oluyede in acting capacity but sought his confirmation as substantive army Chief, after Lagbaja’s death on November 5.
However, Godswill Akpabio, the Senate President, announced Mr Oluyede’s confirmation during plenary on Tuesday after he was cleared by the senators through voice votes.
Oluyede’s appointment was confirmed after the Red Chamber had considered the report presented by Abdulaziz Yar’adua, the Chairman, Senate Committee on Army.
Yar’adua, the senator, representing Katsina Central Senatorial District, affirmed that after the screening, his committee was considered Oluyede qualified to be the army chief, having also been cleared by the State Security Service, SSS.
Consequently, President Tinubu’s request for the confirmation of Oluyede as Nigeria’s substantive Chief of Army Staff was approved with Simon Lalong, the senator representing Plateau South seconding the presentation of the report.
