IkwecheghBy PublisherKindly share:Alex Mascot Ikwechegh, the House of Representatives member, who assaulted an e-hailing cab driver, a bolt driver identified as Stephen Abuwatseya, on Wednesday, arraigned before an Abuja Chief Magistrate Court in Kuje, the Federal Capital Territory, FCT.Ikwechegh, a member of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, who represents Aba North and South Federal Constituency of Abia State, pleaded not guilty to a First Information Report, FIR, that the police filed against him.
He was charged with abuse of office, assault, and threat to life.
Following the lawmaker’s plea of innocence, Mr. A. Umar, the prosecution counsel, applied for a date commence hearing of the matter.
Ikwechegh’s counsel made an oral application for his release on bail, pending the determination of the case, arguing that the charge against him were bailable and he is presumed innocent, as guaranteed by the 1999 Constitution, as amended.
In his ruling, Magistrate Abubakar Umar Sai’id granted the lawmaker bail in the sum of N500, 000 with two sureties in the like sum, adding that the sureties must not only reside within its jurisdiction but also provide their utility bills as proof of residence.
The matter was then adjourned to November 8 for trial.
The lawmaker had been caught in a trending video on social media assaulting the Bolt driver over a disagreement when the driver went to deliver a package to him at his residence.
