A fatal motor accident along the Abakaliki-Enugu Expressway has claimed five lives while seven others, who suffered various degrees of injuries, were hospitalised at Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki.
The accident happened at the G-Hostel area of the highway and involved a fully loaded commercial mass transit bus.
The bus was en route from Enugu when the accident occured.
Mr Joshua Ukandu, the spokesman for the Ebonyi State Police Command, confirmed the incident, adding that the the bus burst into flames after crashing, thereby trapping the passengers five of whom were burnt to death.
Ukandu also disclosed that the remains of the dead were deposited in the mortuary while the injured were receiving treatment in the hospital.
It was gathered that the bus ran into an obstacle being used for the ongoing rehabilitation works on some bad spots on the expressway.
